Assignment and Information
 for Jan 8-14, 2001

The primary topics Jan 8, after the class introduction, were Tripod features and Exposure.  We will continue exposure next week, and introduce control of depth of field.

Assignment:

Buy an 18% Gray Card and 100 speed slide film.  Amateur film preferences:  Kodak Elite Chrome Extra Color 100,   Kodak Elite Chrome 100, and Fuji Sensia II 100.  The first two films are often available in two packs at a discount at Norman Camera (in Kalamazoo).  Look for boxes on the counter up front.  On a per picture basis, 36 exposure rolls are cheaper than 24 exposure rolls.

Take two pictures each of five subjects as follows:  something very light toned (or white), something light toned, something medium toned, something dark toned and something very dark toned (or black).

Put your camera in the MANUAL mode. Meter the subject and take a picture at whatever meter reading the camera suggests. Then hold a gray card in the same light and at the same angle as your subject, and meter the gray card. Then take a picture of the subject at whatever meter reading you got when metering the gray card.

Moonlit Snowscape

With the moon full or nearly full, stand with the moon behind you (or overhead), and compose your snow covered landscape.

Put your camera on a tripod or bean bag or some other support for the long exposures you will be taking.

With 100 speed slide film in your camera, set your camera lens at f/4 and take three pictures at shutter speeds of 1 minute, 3 minutes, and 6 minutes. You will need a cable release or electronic remote for shutter speeds this long. Follow the instructions in your camera manual for BULB exposures. If your camera takes an electronic cable release, make sure you get the right model for you camera body.

If you need more depth of field, set your lens at  f/5.6 and use shutter speeds of 3 minutes, 6 minutes, and 12 minutes.

If the mooon is close to the horizon (and therefore providing less light due to atmospheric light scatter) double all of the above exposure times.

Bring to class next week:
     100 speed slide film,
     camera,
     one or two lenses (ranging from 28mm to
               80mm if you have them), and a
     tripod (if you have one).

If you have completed some of the assignments, bring slides to class.
