Class, May 15, 2001 We began class with the first major topic of the evening,
FILM. We looked at different types of film (slide, negative, black and white, and black and
white chromogenic), pushing slide film, rating certain films at different speeds (with normal processing), and film recommendations. There are two articles to review at this site, Color Film Lite, and Color Photographic films. We looked at slides illustrating the
difference between different films used to photograph the same subject. We looked at
lens selection
(including zoom lenses versus single focal length lenses) and which lenses to choose. We looked at a slide presentation of the difference between changing lenses for purposes of framing and staying at the same photo position, and moving to different postions and changing lenses to change the perspective between foreground and background.
We discussed depth of field
and using hyperfocal distance to insure a certain amount of depth if field on the film when enlarged up to a specific size. You can review the article on Controlling Depth of Field located at this site.
We also looked at how to determine exposure
in unusual situations where the camera meter is of no value, or what to do if the meter happens to quit. You can read more in the article on the Black Cat Exposure Guide.Bring slides next week to our
last class session. Bring pop, cookies, or other munchies too. We will have our last field trip, weather permitting, at West Lake Nature Preserve on Saturday, May 19 at 10 AM. (Time and
circumstances permitting, we might go over to Bishop's Bog at the end of the morning.) Both locations are in Portage and are across the street from each other on
Westnedge about 1.1 miles south of Center. West Lake Nature Preserve is on the east side of Westnedge. Turn east on South Shore Drive and turn into the parking lot. Bishop's Bog is on the west side of
Westnedge. Take the road on the south side of the ball diamonds and park just west of the ball diamonds. The trail begins just across the road from the parking lot. |
